Discipleship Pastor

Location: Suburban Christian Church–Corvallis, OR 97333 Job Type: Full-time, Exempt Travel: 0–5% Reports to: Lead Pastor Summary of Responsibility: This position advances Suburban’s mission by encouraging discipleship within our local church so that people can become Fully Alive in Christ as they grow in their relationships with Christ, the church, and the community. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Discipleship Pastor supports Suburban’s vision by providing leadership in areas that help people grow in their relationship with Christ and with each other within the church. This is done primarily by working through volunteers and providing oversight of our small groups, college, and discipleship ministries, and by providing care, mentoring, and teaching as needed that supports the overall spiritual health of Suburban. DUTIES: Specific duties include: 1. Provide leadership to Small Group ministries a. Recruiting leaders to form new groups b. Training new small group leaders and providing continued training and support to current small group leaders. c. Developing and implementing a plan to create new groups that provide opportunities for people to step into community at Suburban. 2. Form and provide leadership to a college/young adults ministry. a. Establishing a ministry that provides opportunity for college students and young adults to connect with each other and with Suburban b. Maintaining relationship with the Courtyard as an opportunity to connect with college students 3. Provide leadership to other Discipleship ministries a. Plan a yearly schedule of adult education classes (e.g. alpha, courses based on spiritual practices, Deep Dives), teaching as desired. b. Take on aspects of leadership development as Carey Penner works toward retirement c. Serve as staff liaison to the men’s ministry team and Senior Adult ministry team. d. Help create small group lessons and daily devotional questions based on the sermon. 4. Work with the connections ministry to see people get connected to discipleship opportunities. a. Spend time on Sunday mornings in the lobby meeting people b. Assist with establishing relationships with new people 5. General pastoral duties a. Meeting with people one one-on-one to provide mentoring, care and to help foster connection with others. b. Preaching a few times a year as part of teaching rotation. c. Coordinating details of baptisms and officiating at baptisms, weddings, and funerals as needed. d. Attending staff meetings and managing budgets for all discipleship areas. e. Working collaboratively with the staff to answer administrative questions, ensure programs are promoted and respond to inquiries in your area. REPORTING: This position reports to the Senior Pastor and will be reviewed annually by that position and will have regular 1-on-1 meetings for check ins. POLICIES: This person will adhere to the administrative policies of Suburban Christian Church as outlined in the Employee Handbook. SKILLS REQUIRED: Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Solid public speaking skills. Solid knowledge of the Gospel and the ability to share it effectively with non-believers. Good leadership skills and effective management skills. Knowledge of technology necessary for effective ministry. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to handle confidential information. Ability to recruit others and motivate them for service.
